Monsoon Skincare Routine That Actually Works

Monsoon in West Bengal brings humidity levels above 80%, sudden downpours, and a sudden spike in skin complaints. Oiliness, breakouts, fungal infections, dullness — your skin feels different in monsoon and your routine needs to change with it.

After 8+ years of helping clients in Bankura navigate seasonal skin changes, here's the monsoon skincare routine that actually works.

Why Monsoon Affects Your Skin

High humidity means your skin's natural oil (sebum) doesn't evaporate as quickly. It mixes with sweat, dirt, and dead skin cells, clogging pores. Bacteria and fungi thrive in this environment. Result: breakouts, blackheads, fungal acne, and dull, lifeless skin.

Even oily skin becomes dehydrated in monsoon because we tend to drink less water. So you need a routine that controls oil without stripping moisture.

The Monsoon Routine — Step by Step

Morning (AM)

  1. Cleanse with a gentle, foaming cleanser containing salicylic acid (BHA). It cuts through oil and decongests pores. We love La Roche-Posay Effaclar or Minimalist 2% Salicylic.
  2. Tone with an alcohol-free toner. Rose water or green tea toner works. Avoid astringents — they trigger more oil production.
  3. Antioxidant Serum — Vitamin C (10%) in the morning. It brightens, fights free radicals, and boosts sunscreen.
  4. Moisturize with a gel-based, oil-free moisturizer. Look for hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Skip heavy creams.
  5. Sunscreen — yes, even in monsoon. UV rays pass through clouds. Use a matte-finish, water-resistant SPF 50. Reapply if you're outdoors.

Night (PM)

  1. Double Cleanse — oil-based cleanser first (to dissolve sunscreen, sebum, and pollution), then a water-based cleanser. This is critical in monsoon.
  2. Exfoliate 2x a week with a chemical exfoliant (glycolic or mandelic acid). Skip scrubs — they cause micro-tears that invite bacteria.
  3. Treat — alternate nights between niacinamide (oil control, pore refining) and a low-strength retinoid (cell turnover). On exfoliation nights, skip the retinoid.
  4. Moisturize — same gel moisturizer, applied to slightly damp skin to lock in hydration.

Monsoon-Specific Skin Problems & Fixes

1. Sudden Breakouts

Cut dairy and sugar for 2 weeks. Add a BHA spot treatment. Change your pillowcase daily. Stop touching your face. If breakouts are cystic and painful, see a dermatologist — you may need prescription treatment.

2. Fungal Acne (Small, Itchy Bumps)

Common in monsoon. Caused by Malassezia yeast. Stop all oils, esters, and fatty acids in your routine. Use a ketoconazole wash on affected areas 2-3 times a week. It's contagious — sanitize your phone, towels, and pillowcases.

3. Dull, Lifeless Skin

The humidity makes skin look greasy, not glowy. Use a Vitamin C serum in the AM and a 5% glycolic acid toner twice a week. Get a de-tan facial once a month — it makes a huge difference.

4. Athlete's Foot & Body Fungal Infections

Wear open shoes when possible. Dry between toes thoroughly after bathing. Use an antifungal powder if you sweat a lot. Change out of damp clothes immediately.

Lifestyle Tips for Monsoon Skin

  • Drink 2.5-3 liters of water daily. Add jeera water, buttermilk, and tender coconut.
  • Eat seasonal — jamun, pear, apple, cucumber, bitter gourd. They detoxify naturally.
  • Avoid street food in monsoon — stomach infections trigger skin breakouts.
  • Sleep on cotton pillowcases, change every 3 days.
  • Sanitize your phone screen weekly — it touches your face all day.
  • Avoid heavy makeup in monsoon. If you must, use oil-free, non-comedogenic products.

What to Avoid in Monsoon

  • Heavy creams and cold creams
  • Oils on face (coconut, almond, olive)
  • Sleeping with makeup on
  • Over-exfoliating (max 2x a week)
  • Astringents and alcohol-based toners
  • Touching your face
